Doraville, Ga.
In October, 1949, a group of Baptists of the community began discussing the possibility of a Baptist Church in Doraville. After satisfactory arrangements had been made for a place to hold services, it was decided to attempt the organization of a church, with the help of Rev. R.F. Faires, field worker of the Lawrenceville Baptist Association and Dr. A. Scott Patterson, retired missionary.
The first worship service was held Sunday, Oct 16 in the Doraville School auditorium. Two services have been held each Sunday since, and prayer services each Wednesday evening. A Sunday School was organized the last Sunday in October and has
met each Sunday since.
In November a study course was taught by Rev. R.F. Faires for the officers and teachers of the Sunday School.
On the afternoon of November 27 the church was formally constituted in a special service, under the direction of a Council composed of pastors of the churches of the Lawrenceville Baptist Association. There were thirty-five charter members.
In January the church licensed Mr. L.G. Humphrey, one of its members, to preach.
In January, 1950, the church purchased a lot 200 ft. X 450 ft. from Dr. J. E. Flowers at a cost of $6000.
On the last Saturday in February members of the church and their friends met on the lot and cleaned off rubbish and undergrowth.
In March the Board of Trustees and those who could help cut down the trees on the lot and had them sawed into lumber to be used in the building.
In March two new organizations were created, the Baptist Training Union, which meets every Sunday evening and the woman’s Missionary Society, which meets once a month.
On April 9 baptismal services were held in Norcross Baptist Church for all who had come into the church for baptism since its organization, which was four.
The Sunday School has been well represented in all of the meetings of the Lawrenceville Sunday School Association, which meets on the second Sunday of each month. At the April meeting at Sugar Hill Baptist Church our Sunday School was awarded
the Efficiency Banner for that month.
In regular conference in April the church voted to furnish a room in the new addition to the Georgia Baptist Hospital at a cost of $500. A plaque will be placed in the room in memory of A. Scott Patterson, Jr., son of our supply pastor and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. A. Scott Patterson, Sr.
In June a Vacation Bible School was held each day for one week, with an average attendance of 109.
In June conference three deacons were elected. Work was also begun in June on a $14,000. concrete block building.
On Aug. 13 the Lawrenceville Sunday School Association met with our church and. our Sunday School won the efficiency banner for the second time.
Revival services were held from Aug. 13-20 with wight [sic] additions to the church. On August 20 baptismal services were held in which fourteen were baptized.
Our church was organized with 35 charter members and now has a membership of 84.
A gift of $1,000. has been received from the Georgia Baptist Association to be used on construction of the building.
The church has purchased the lot at a cost of $6,000.
To date the building, grading, etc. has cost 5,050.37
