Gholston founded Doraville' s Mount Carmel A.M.E. Church in the 1880s. It first met in the Gholston home, near the present Embry Hills Shopping Center. The church was rebuilt at its present site on Carver Drive in 1961

This church structure, located on the present site of the General Motors Plant, served Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church until it had to be torn down to make way for GM. It was replaced in 1961 by the present church building on Carver Circle.


MT. CARMEL A.M.E. CHURCH 1995
Greater Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church was rebuilt at its Carver Drive location in 1959. Doraville's first black church, it was started in the late 1870s by the Rev. and Mrs. George W. Gholston. It was first housed in the Gholston home, then in a lodge hall on Peachtree Road. From there, the congregation moved to an abandoned store on Peachtree Road.
